Late night post. I’m sitting here planning my upcoming work week as I always do on Sundays and doing so made me think of my clients and their goals. I decided that, even though it was late at night, I’m going to write a quick post about goal setting to help you in 2019.
Now, we’re told that our goals must be attainable and SMART, correct?
That’s what I remember being told for years; that’s what I consult my clients on. We also know that the only thing that matters with your goals is that they are specific, measureable, attainable, realistic and timely.
While that’s easy to remember, and of course looks good on paper, it’s only the first step for those of you who want to achieve big things.
Think about it, do you really want to be stuck with just “attainable” and “realistic” goals when what you dream about is having a 3 to 4-day workweek, traveling, and enough money to sustain your household? It’s pretty clear that those “safe,” smart goals aren’t going to get you there.
Actually, just limiting yourself to those types of goals might actively be holding you back.
Think about what happens when you set an “attainable” goal of earning only 10% more than you did last year. Doing this puts in your head that you only have to work 10% more. You might feel like you should only spend 10% more on ads or product creation. You might also only reach out to 10% more potential clients.
And you’ll more than likely earn about 10% more.
You then get happy because you reached your goal.
Do you see the problem here?

Did that 10% goal make you want to work harder or did it only make a subconscious ceiling on your earning potential that you were unable to break through?
Instead of focusing on goals that are just attainable and realistic, smart business owners know that the key to their real success lies in creating dream goals that feel out of reach, possibly even UN-attainable.
Buy Ky, don’t YOU teach not to do that? Yes, I do. I also teach that you need to have your vision board and list with your dream goals so that you work harder to surpass your smart, attainable goals so that you reach your dream goals faster than planned.
Smart, successful entrepreneurs don’t strive to earn 10% more than last year. They want 50% or 75% more! They push themselves; they find new and better ways to operate their business so they don’t have to work twice as hard, but they do remain open to the possibility of doing so (at least in the short term) when it’s necessary.
Now, I’m not saying to just run around making crazy goals and expect them to fall from the sky. You still need to work HARD for what you want. However, when you shun the attainable in favor of the “OMG, will I ever do THAT?” type of goal, you push yourself beyond those self-imposed limits and reach beyond the stars.
Keep in mind that you might not double your income, but you’re almost guaranteed to do better than a mere 10% increase. So, push your boundaries and set big, audacious goals. You know that even if you fail, you’ll be much further ahead than those smart goals would have you.
Your To Do – List Your Upcoming Week’s Goals
As with every Sunday, I prepare for my week. Why do I do this? So there is no guessing; I know exactly what I’m doing and how I have to do it for the upcoming week.
Now, my idea of S.M.A.R.T Goals are 3 types of goals each week. These are the types of goals I want you to set for the week:
- Easy Goals – also known as an Attainable goal. This is a goal that you know you can do this week – meaning NOTHING should get in your way of doing it. This should be able to be finished and off of your list in the first two days of the week.
- Challenging Goals – also known as Ambitious goals. These goals are a bit more challenging for you to complete and may take a bit more effort and focus.
- Maximum Effort Goals – also known as an Audacious goal. This goal will take maximum effort to complete. For me, this goal usually will take me all 4 weeks to get done. It’s soemthing that NEEDS to be done but will take serious work and attention. This is the goal that will help you crash through your glass ceiling.
